Michael Schafer Esq., The Wine Counselor℠, is the charismatic wine educator, speaker, sommelier and consultant who entertains while educating. His humorous and fun approach to wine is reflected in his trademark phrase, "I taste bad wine so you don't have to"®

He currently teaches Enology & Viticulture and Management of Food and Beverage Operations at The International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Michigan. He is also an instructor at Macomb County Community College and co-instructor with Madame Charity Suczek at Le Petite Cordon Bleu School of Haute Cuisine. He is a premier event planner & caterer in charge of training of leadership & staff.

He has been the keynote speaker at a variety of events: the 2010 and 2011 Michigan International Wine Expo, the 2010 Michigan Chefs de Cuisine Association, the 2010 Meadow Brook Wine & Food Festival, the 2010 Taste of Eastern Market Demonstrations, and the 2010 Grand Rapids International Wine & Food Festival.

He has had articles published in 944 magazine and WJR Wine List, appeared on Dining In the D (Detroit) TV show on WTVS-56 public television and featured on CNN, ABC, WJR-760 AM, WTVS-56, Detroit News and the Oakland Press. He has been a judge at International Wine Competitions and the Taster's Guild. He also has Wine Distributor experience with on-premise & off-premise marketing and is a member of La Confrerie des Vigernons de Saint Vincent.

He serves on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Wine Organization (DWO), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to educating consumers about wine. The DWO benefits children's charities. He also serves on the Board of Trustees & Wine Wizard A Night for Sight (Alliance for Vision Research).

He is an active member of the community. He was the Sommelier host for the 2010 Rare! Wine event to benefit Henry Ford Hospital's Multidisciplinary Spine Program and the 80th Birthday celebration honoring Chef Milos Chielka CMC. He was the VIP Tasting Room Host at the Winning Futures Annual Fundraiser. He helps raise funds for the Ann Arbor WineFest Annual Fundraiser, was assistant to Claudia Tyagi MS and Chef Brian Polycn-Dining with the Masters 2010 benefit for Henry Ford Hospital and the consultant and speaker for the Sauk Trail benefit for the Boy Scouts of America.
